One of the projects I am excited to be a part of is creating a mindful parenting support group curriculum for parents of children with chronic illness or special needs….goodness, that’s a mouthful! Probably why we’re still working on creating a good, short and catchy title. If you have any ideas, I would love to hear them!
The group consists of the creator of Listening Mothers, psychotherapists and social workers in northwest who focus on mindfulness practices, one pediatrician and a chaplain from Seattle Childrens Hospital. It’s an inspiring group of people and I love the discussions we have. One of the resounding themes that has come up is how to help these parents connect with the JOY they experience in parenting their child. By no means is the intent to diminish the challenges or struggles. That’s a reality. Living, loving and caring for a child with chronic health challenges or special needs comes with unique challenges. But, as one of the mom’s said, she describes herself and other moms she knows as “specialists in joy.” Her reasoning – when you’re dealing with challenges, meeting with specialists, working your schedule around surgeries and blood work and feeding needs, those moments of joy stand out more. It’s her truth and it’s beautiful to hear.
