Book Review: Trans Like Me: A Journey for All of Us, by CN Lester

“Opening ourselves up to the trans experience – whether or not we see ourselves as trans – means embracing a new way of seeing the world. It requires trust, empathy, and imagination. It is not a one-way process, but a journey we are all on together.”

CN Lester has seamlessly blended their personal experiences, social commentary incredibly relevant to our current times, and intriguing historical facts into a powerful narrative. This really is a work for all of us.

With a wide breadth of topics, CN Lester speaks about media and the way trans individuals are portrayed, concerns and realities about treatment for trans children, the public use of bathrooms and other current legislation debates, mental health and trans and so much more. As someone who supports many trans young adults and their families, I am often asked questions about these topics. This book has given me confidence in how to offer answers to those questions that are both informed from the personal experience of a trans individual, and sensitive to the breadth of experience of individuals within the trans community.

I’ll finish this review with one of the final sentences of the book:

“My future might look different from yours – and none of us can predict the exact details of what will come. But I trust that with compassion, empathy, the deep respect for what is unique and special in each of us – the core lesson of the trans experience – that it is a future we could all be proud of creating.”
